If you're operating a coworking space in a Canadian province where both federal and provincial taxes apply—such as British Columbia (GST + PST) or Québec (GST + QST)—you’ll need to charge two separate taxes on your invoices. This setup is commonly referred to as multiple taxes in Cobot.
Here’s how to understand them—and how to configure them in your Cobot account.
What Are Multiple Taxes?
In some provinces in Canada, you must charge two tax rates for the some item:
GST (Goods and Services Tax) – 5% (federal tax)
PST (Provincial Sales Tax) or QST – varies by province (e.g., 7% in BC, 9.975% in Québec)
Unlike HST (used in provinces like Ontario), GST and PST/QST must be listed separately on your invoices.
Province/Territory | Type of Tax* | Total Rate* | Notes* |
Alberta | GST only | 5% | No provincial sales tax |
British Columbia | GST + PST | 12% | 5% GST + 7% PST (must show separately) |
Manitoba | GST + RST | 12% | 5% GST + 7% RST (similar to PST) |
New Brunswick | HST | 15% | Combined tax (no need to split) |
Newfoundland & Labrador | HST | 15% | Combined tax |
Northwest Territories | GST only | 5% | No territorial tax |
Nova Scotia | HST | 15% | Combined tax |
Nunavut | GST only | 5% | No territorial tax |
Ontario | HST | 13% | Combined tax |
Prince Edward Island | HST | 15% | Combined tax |
Québec | GST + QST | 14.975% | 5% GST + 9.975% QST (must show separately) |
Saskatchewan | GST + PST | 11% | 5% GST + 6% PST |
Yukon | GST only | 5% | No territorial tax |
